Honorable Sonya Williams Barnes

Sonya Williams Barnes is the daughter of Rev. Theodore R. Williams, Jr. and the late Rev. Rose Mary Hayes Williams and the mother of one son, Kenson Shedrick. She is a 1991 Political Science Major, English Minor graduate of Jackson State University and a 1997 graduate of Bishop State Mortuary Science School. She worked as a Legislative Correspondent and Legal Researcher from 1990-1997 in the United States House of Representatives in Washington D.C.

She is owner of Lockett-Williams Mortuary, Incorporated and a licensed funeral director. She was first elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives from District 119 in 2011. Her Mississippi House Committee Assignments include: Conservation and Water Resources; Gaming; Marine Resources; Ports, Harbors and Airports and Tourism.


Representative Barnes memberships include:  Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church -Youth Council Advisory Board, NAACP, North Gulfport Civic Club, West Gulfport Civic Club, Harrison County Democratic Advisory Board, MS Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, confederation of Democratic Woman, Saving Our Sisters- Organizer, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Volunteer for St. Jude Dream Home Give-A-Way; Community Organizer for Organize for America 2008. She is a Governor's appointee to the state of Mississippi teen pregnancy prevention advisory board.
